Carousel Rounding Boards

About the boards and our generous sponsors

RoundingBoardsAround the top of the carousel are 18 rounding boards. Traditionally they are hand-painted, pastoral scenes. But we commissioned computer graphic artists to create what we believe are the first rounding boards to use a montage of colorized, historic photographs. Each board takes you back in time to tell our area's rich story through the people, places and events that we never want to forget. You can learn about each one in a booklet available through out gift shop.

Blossomtime

The Blossomtime Festival is one of the oldest and largest multi-community festivals in the state of Michigan. Held annually in May, the festival and parade have enthralled onlookers since the early 1900’s with their queens, floats and community events.

The Blossomtime Rounding Board was made possible by a donation from Manny and Mary Ann Raschke.

Downtown Remembered

Local retail shops and banks are vital to our community. A source for goods and services, they welcome locals and visitors alike. This board remembers The Hennes Company, Gillespie’s Drugs, The Peoples State Bank, and other Twin Cities retailers.

The Downtown Remembered Rounding Board was made possible by a donation from an anonymous donor.

Many businesses have a longstanding history in the Twin Cities. Companies such as Whirlpool Corporation, LECO, Gast Manufacturing, Inc. and Vail Rubber Works, Inc. have provided a foundation of employment, innovation and community growth.

Our places of worship have always reached out to those in need. Some of our oldest congregations are St. Joseph First Congregational, Benton Harbor Congregational, St. Joseph Catholic, Temple B’nai Shalom and St. Joseph Trinity Lutheran Church.

The Faith in our Lives Rounding Board was made possible by an anonymous donor.

FarmingtheLand

Farming the Land

The temperate climate along Lake Michigan makes this one of the best food-growing regions in the world. Our farmers fill tables locally and nationwide with strawberries, cherries, peaches, blueberries, apples and wines as well as vegetables and grains.

The Farming the Land Rounding Board was made possible by a donation from Stanley, Barbara and Diane Radewald.

HistoricalLandmarks

Historical Landmarks

As you explore the downtowns and neighborhoods of the Twin Cities you’ll find beautiful and stately architecture. This board showcases several historic treasures including public libraries, courthouses, and the Morton House.

The Historical Landmarks Rounding Board was made possible by a donation from Bruce C. Conybeare in honor of his children and grandchildren.

HistoryoftheTerritory

History of the Territory

Two of the most renowned European explorers, Father Marquette and LaSalle, paved the way for others to follow. Here we commemorate the Native Americans who first lived in the region and the fur traders, Fort Miami soldiers and loggers that came after.

The History of the Territory Rounding Board was made possible by a donation from Comfort Suites, Stevensville.

InnovationsInTransportation

Innovations in Transportation

From steamships to trains crossing our historic swing truss bridge to airplanes (Augustus Moore Herring’s airplane flight on Silver Beach predated the Wright Brothers’ first flight) to modern motor vehicles, this board highlights how we find new ways to get around.

The Innovations in Transportation Rounding Board was made possible by donations from the MacFarlane and Rice Families and their many friends in memory of Tom and Lou MacFarlane and daughter Sara MacFarlane-Rice.

MusicInOurLives

Music in Our Lives

Music has a long tradition of bringing people together in the Twin Cities. This board celebrates the talents of our symphony orchestra, municipal and marching bands, choirs, instrumentalists, singers and all those that dance.

The Music in our Lives Rounding Board was made possible by a donation from John and Dede Howard.

OntheWater

On the Water

Working and playing on the water is one of the best things about living in Benton Harbor/St. Joseph. To commemorate our lifestyle, this board captures scenes of a steamship from Chicago, the U.S. Coast Guard, fishing and relaxing on the beach.

The On the Water Rounding Board was made possible by a donation from William and Jane Marohn.

ProudlyWeServe

Proudly We Serve

Our area has had many brave men and women serve our local community as firefighters and law enforcement officers as well as in our state’s and country’s military service. We express our gratitude by featuring on this board the memorials that pay tribute to them.

The Proudly We Serve Rounding Board was made possible by a donation from Peg Williamson.

SentinelsoftheHarbor

Sentinels of the Harbor

For more than a century, lighthouses built at the mouth of the St. Joseph River and high on the bluffs have guided ships safely into the harbor. This board showcases these picturesque beacons as well as the north and south piers where people have strolled and fished for decades, knowing there’s no better place to watch the sunset.

The Sentinels of the Harbor Rounding Board was made possible by a donation from Jack and Julie Keller.

SilverBeachAmusementPark

Silver Beach Amusement Park

Generations of people around the country can recall fun-filled memories of Silver Beach – cinnamon-sugar elephant ears, the clack of the roller coaster, the music of the carousel organ, the laughter as they played carnival games and picnicked by the sparkling water.

SummerintheCity

Summer in the City

People in the Twin Cities love to create happy memories for all ages. So we party all year around, but especially in the summer. This board features local festivals, art fairs and summer-time food and fun in Southwestern Michigan.

The Summer in the City Rounding Board was made possible by a donation from Tom and Helen Sinn.

TheHouseofDavid

The House of David

In 1903 Ben and Mary Purnell founded The House of David, a Christian religious colony in Benton Harbor. For decades, tourists played in their amusement park and watched baseball players with their signature long hair and beards.

The House of David Rounding Board was made possible by a donation from an anonymous donor.

TheWhitcombHotel

The Whitcomb Hotel

The Whitcomb Hotel (formerly the St. Charles Hotel) has been part of the St. Joseph landscape since 1868. Wealthy Chicago visitors vacationed here until the hotel closed in 1968. Today it is a retirement home and its porch still holds grand parties and dances.

The Whitcomb Hotel Rounding Board was made possible by a donation from the Whitcomb Tower Retirement Residence.

WinterintheCity

Winter in the City

Winter is one of our favorite seasons. This board shows how we marvel at Mother Nature’s ice sculptures and regional artists ice carvings, skate in our local rink and how we stay warm on snowy nights with sparkling lights and friends around a crackling fire.

The Winter in the City Rounding Board was made possible by a donation from Tom Gawlik.

YesterdaysEnterprises

Yesterday’s Enterprises

While some companies’ doors may have closed or their products may have changed, they left an economic legacy for the Twin Cities. Some companies that contributed to our economic growth include Clark Equipment, AUSCO and VM.
